Beloved - Emrys

I’m scared.

I’m sad.

I’m sobbing in my sheets. I feel the warm wet tears soaking the pillow beneath my face. I cannot stop shaking. I curl my legs closer, trying to find comfort.

I squeeze my eyes shut against the darkness of night.

Why am I alone?

I’m so alone, so cold. So scared. Scared of the doctors. I’m scared of forgetting.

What am I forgetting this time?

How many times have they shocked me hoping to find out how my magic works? How many more times will they test me until they are satisfied? Did I really DO magic in the first place?

Where is the faerie who is always with me? I forget her name. Does it start with an M? Mary? I don’t remember.

I hear a tap and I freeze. My heart jumps and I hold my breath. Something is there. What is it? The doctors? The nurse? Something else?

I hear it again and I swallow hard, pulling the sheet from over my face and looking at the window. There is something at the window, I can’t make out it's shape.

I sit up for a better look. It’s a small figure on the sill. A faerie, with long dark reddish hair, almost purple, and it's braided over her shoulder. I know this faerie.

Mary… Mari… Meri…. “Merigold!” I shout.

She’s inside the window, tapping the glass. She turns to me, eyes wide and full of concern. She floats down to the bed and settles against my forehead, brushing my hair away from my eyes.

“Shhh, shh, I’m here Emrys. I’m still here. We’re in your room. Please hold on a little longer. Only a few more days. I’m so sorry. So sorry.”

She comforts me, small hands caressing my cheek, calming me. I sigh and settle into the pillow.

“The waning moon is coming. Just a little longer. I’m sorry” she repeats until I drift to sleep.
