Assignment
December 5, 2017
“I can’t believe you’re telling me this now! Of all the things we need right now is a new member with zero training!” I yell over the phone line. The spacious yet empty meeting room echos with my voice. Despite working with the magic branch of the Order of Vigilance for 3 years now, I am still surprised at how young they recruit.
“I get it, he’s 17,” I repeat over the phone, “That's not young, but he’s been where for 10 years?”
The voice over the line sighs loudly. They are frustrated with my reaction.
“Just so you know, this will cut into my research time. I hope I’m compensated for the trouble you’re causing me. I also will need help. I doubt I can handle his teenage confusion alone.”
They know I drive a hard bargain. I get that from Finn. Ever since they had be placed in the North when I first started with them, I grew a tough skin to my morals and my research. The job was much more than I had anticipated. The stranger had definitely undersold the details of the position.
I twirl the phone line with my finger. Cell phones didn’t work underground, so landlines were still a thing here at Stonehenge.
“So send me an email with the details of this assignment and I’ll prep for the new kids arrival.” I say.
They seem to want to tell me over the phone so I pull up a chair and get out a pen. The pad of papers to far for the line to reach so I pull on the etheria cloud around me and summon the paper in my direction. It gently floats toward me, thumping on the worn table as I let the etheria go.
“Ok, ok, fine, can you repeat that from the beginning? Yes, OK, E-M-R-I, no Y-S. Barnes? OK. 17 years, red head. Ok. Really? Fae?” The kid had Fae magic? Was I hearing this right? Fae magic was one of the strongest magics to possess and to be inherent was extremely rare. The last known human to possess Fae magic was Biddy Early. She too was from Ireland, I wonder if they might be related.
I scribble down the details of the case; He’d been adopted before being admitted to the Central Mental Hospital in Dublin, Ireland at the age of 7. Man, that must be rough. According to the records he speaks to faeries and can potentially foresee minor events of those around him. New details of his current ability have yet to be transcripted but they were handling the details of his release shortly.
I put the pen down, feeling a tear drip down my cheek and fall onto the page. I feel a lump in my throat and the voice on the other end pauses.
“Yea,” my voice catches, “I’m fine. I’ll take him. Don’t worry about compensation, but I’d still like some help.” I’m tormented by the thought of this kid growing up with no one, never having tasted apple pie or having loving parents. What happened to him?
“It’s good. I’ll take care of him. How did you discover his case anyway?” I can’t dispel my curiosity at how they found out about this kid.
The voice is silent, as if they’re thinking about how much they can tell me, if at all. Then the silence is broken. I grin.
“So the Fae boy isn’t merely a direct descendant of Biddy Early, but also has a deeper ancestry tied to one of the strongest Fae known to man?” Amazing. “That’s exciting. I’d like to see what he can do. When can we expect him?”
They can’t give me a date, so I ask for a heads up when he arrives at the Citadel instead. “Thanks. I’ll be expecting him.” I hang up the phone and lean back in the chair, it creaks with age. “Finn! We’re getting a new recruit! And guess what?!
My black shadow kitty strolls out from a side room glowing with firelight. “What wonderful news, you won’t be lonely anymore.” He responds. He always knows how to poke a bruise.
“I was not lonely, just unaccustomed to the lack of persons posted here.”
“Sure, that was it. So what did you want me to guess?”
“He’s a Fae!”
